Chatbot for Poultry Farms: Responding to Avian Influenza in Mexico

Avian influenza poses a serious risk to animal and human health, the rural economy, and food security in Mexico, where poultry accounts for over 63% of livestock production and 378 eggs are consumed per person each year. Recent 2023 outbreaks in Sonora and Jalisco affected more than 84 million birds, and on April 1, 2025, Mexico confirmed its first human H5N1 case in a three-year-old girl from Durango. Although national and international agencies (SENASICA, WHO, FAO, OIE) have protocols, gaps remain in making guidance accessible to small-scale and backyard producers.

Drawing lessons from digital tools used during the Ebola and COVID-19 crises, this project developed a Botpress-based chatbot tailored to Mexican poultry farms. Using AI-driven simulations to identify producers’ most common questions, it delivers clear, context-specific answers grounded in official sources. Unlike mass-SMS platforms or health-worker networks, this interactive assistant offers technical guidance, localized prevention advice, and decision-support in real time. Its design not only strengthens rural public health and the digital transformation of agriculture but also serves as a replicable model for managing other emerging zoonotic threats.
